Chicago Internet Cafe

The first U.S. cyber cafe was a Chicago Internet cafe named Suba, opened by Todd Bodenstein and Alex Strasheim back in the April of 1995.

The original site of the first U.S. cyber cafe was at 2945 N. Broadway in Chicago.

The duo sold Suba to Bean.Net in 2000.

In addition to cyber cafes in Chicago, you can get online at WiFi access points with your own laptop. There are at least 390 WiFi hotspots in Chicago, of which 129 are located in cafes.

These cafes include:

  • 225 Cafe (225 West WashingtonChicago IL 60606)
  • Box Car Café (723 West WrightwoodChicago IL 60614)
  • Starbucks (550 West Van Buren Street (100 Union Tower) Chicago IL 60607)

As is the case with many other major cities, you can also access Internet on computers provided by public libraries.

In fact, all Chicago's 79 Public Library locations currently provide free computers and free Internet access to visitors.

That Internet access also includes free WiFi service, also at all of the 79 libraries, for your own laptop.

All in all, the Chicago Public Library system offers about 1,800 computers for public use citywide.

Chicago's Central Library, the Harold Washington Library Center, is located at 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois 60605. Their contact telephone number is (312) 747-3147.

The Central Library has 78 one-hour Internet stations, 18 Express Internet stations (15 minute sessions with no printing), and 37 one-hour Word Processing stations.

You can also locate other branches of Chicago libraries for Internet access (opens up a new window).

In addition, if you need Internet access outside cyber cafes' and libraries hours of operation, you can go to a Fedex Kinko's store (fedexkinkos.com), as some of them offer computer/Internet access 24/7.
